Mumbai Neighborhoods FAQs

South Mumbai (Colaba and Fort) is the best base for first-time visitors. All major landmarks — Gateway of India, CST Station, Marine Drive, and the museums — are within walking distance or a short taxi ride. The area has the highest concentration of hotels and is the most tourist-friendly part of the city.
It depends on what you are looking for. Bandra has the best restaurant and cafe scene. Mohammed Ali Road near Crawford Market has the best Muslim street food. Chowpatty Beach is famous for chaat. Dadar has incredible Maharashtrian food. For a food-focused visit, stay in Bandra or South Mumbai and make day trips to the others.
Mumbai's local train network is the backbone of city transport and connects all major neighborhoods. Trains run every 2-4 minutes during peak hours. However, they are extremely crowded during rush hour (8-11 AM and 5-9 PM). Auto-rickshaws are available in the suburbs, while taxis and Ola/Uber operate everywhere. South Mumbai to Bandra takes 30-45 minutes by train or 45-90 minutes by road depending on traffic.
Colaba has the most budget hostels and guesthouses concentrated in a tourist-friendly area. Andheri is affordable and close to the airport. Dadar offers the best value for money with great train connectivity. Avoid Juhu and Lower Parel for budget stays as they tend to be more expensive.
